My Kindergartener’s teacher is having a birthday this month. My son, who loves using stamps, wanted to make a card. For the last couple of nights we have stamped, colored and die cut. We finally came up with this card.
We used a new stamp and die set from Stamps of Life by Stephanie Bernard along with her ink pads and matching pens. My son loves lots of bright colors, so I pulled out an old paper pack from Bo Bunny “On the Go” to bring out all his colors. He wanted it to look glossy and “painted” so we added Glossy Accents. The banners are cut from an older Sizzix set of birthday dies and stamps, but the sweet little goodies are all part of the Ice cream Truck set.
A couple of details… I used the detail die on the stamped image and layered it to a second one to minimize curling with the glossy accents. Then cut a “shadow” piece of the truck to pull it out from the busy background as well as dimensional tape. The little cloud of exhaust was fussy cut from the paper collection that had airplanes in the clouds.
The last couple of nights has my son asking to work on the card, and I enjoyed the time we spent talking about colors, his ideas and just having fun. I realize how much I do tend to be nervous since my supplies cost a little more than Crayola pens or crayons. However, this experience had my son working on his “fine” motors skills, critical thinking and depth perception. He was so careful using my pens, demonstrating his respect for other people’s things. All of these are skills Kindergarteners have to learn, but it is so easier as a mom to get him to practice it when he is engaged in something he loves to do.
It also gave me the opportunity to empower him by respecting his ideas and asking his opinions. It is hard sometimes not to do it for them, and yes, I had to tamp that down a few times, but he came to life sharing his views. He is so proud of his card. He woke up this morning asking how many more days till he can give it to his teacher.
While the card is not what my picky self would give, my son’s proud expression as he shared it with his older brothers makes it my favorite project yet!
